SURVIVORS / United Nations Development Programme at The Swedish Parliament

Exhibition curated by creative producer Johanna Strinnvik & art director Magnus Naddermier.

Africa bears the brunt of the impact of terrorism in lives lost, economies ruined and relationships fractured. Extremists target public spaces such as markets and bus stations, forcing people to make a difficult choice between risking death by going to work to earn a meagre living, or risking the very survival of their families.

The stories of survivors is captured in a photography exhibition travelling around the world seeking to shed light on, and amplify the voices of those who often suffer in silence. Their diverse religious, ethnic and national backgrounds highlight that violent extremism is a shared burden and one that humanity as a whole must respond to.

Malin Fezehai is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York. She has worked with TIME, The New York Times, the New Yorker, The Malala Foundation and WaterAid. Malin Fezehai has taken the photos of the survivors in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria and Uganda.

The curators Johanna Strinnvik & Magnus Naddermier also customized a steel framework for the images and the stories, designed to enable a flexible installation of the exhibition on several different locations in the Nordic countries during 2018, as well as tailormade wooden boxes to keep the exhibition safe while traveling.
